The 3rd India International Science Festival (IISF 2017) will be held at Chennai from 13th to 16th October 2017. IISF 2017 is being organized by Ministry of Earth Sciences, Ministry of Science and Technology & Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA). This event is hosted by National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) at IIT Madras, Anna University, CSIR – CLRI and Madras University. The festival is primarily aimed to involve the common masses to improve their scientific understanding, temperament and appreciation towards various Indian achievements in the field of Science & Technology. It provides a platform to the young scientists, students, technocrats for exchange of knowledge and ideas. IISF supports Government’s flagship programs like Swachh Bharat, Digital India, Smart City, Swasth Bharat etc.

Following the footsteps of our former President of India Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s vision 2020 for Bharat Nirman, IISF 2017 is organizing a National Level Competition with the theme.

Ideas for ‘Bharat Nirman’:

Three major challenges faced by the society across the nation will be posed before the general public for deriving the most feasible solutions. The challenges will be uploaded on the IISF 2017 website in the form of questions. The best and practical solution provided by the competitors will be rewarded.

Problem Statements
1. Behaviour Change

Behaviour change is fundamental to the Swachhata. Several inter-personal techniques through community approaches to sanitation are being used across the country to trigger behavior change. But old habits die hard and behaviour change takes time. Some people continue to defecate in the open even after having a household toilet.

Therefore innovative solutions to trigger and motivate people to stop open defecation and use toilets at scale is invited.

The solutions should be

Scalable
Non coercive
Socially acceptable
Yield instant or immediate shift in behaviours

2. Toilet technology

There is a need to promote affordable, sustainable and environmentally friendly toilet technologies across the nation. However, in certain parts of the country, these available technologies have not been successful in being robust and cost-effective. This is especially true for areas which are flood-prone, areas which have a hard rock surface, and areas which are remote and poorly connected with transportation infrastructure.

The solutions for innovative toilet technologies from the participants is invited for the following areas:

Remote and poorly connected areas or/and
Hard rock areas or/and
Flood Prone areas
It is expected that the technology is cost-effective, sustainable, reliable and durable, user-friendly, weather proof, environmental-friendly, and preferably uses locally available material (locally implies the area to which the technology is built for).

3. Technological solutions for safe disposal of menstrual waste

With increase in education and awareness levels around Menstrual Health and Hygiene, more and more women and adolescent girls in the country are switching to safe sanitary options to manage their menstrual cycles. However, there is still no formal waste management system of sanitary waste. Often these are disposed off in fields, water bodies, flushed in toilets or dumped along with the regular solid waste.

We are looking for technological solutions to manage and to dispose off sanitary waste. The solution should be:

  • Safe for the environment, and not cause any air, water or soil pollution
  • Cost-effective
  • calable across villages and institutions such as schools, colleges, etc.

Last date to receive the solutions from the participants will be 15th Sep 2017.

Terms And Conditions
  • The competition will be a team event of 3-4 members per team
  • Each team will upload the solutions on IISF 2017 website
  • Format for submission – word (doc/docx)
  • Components of the solution –
    • Indian Perspective
    • Objective
    • Design of the study and its feasibility
    • Suggestions

Declaration of result on the website by 25th Sep 2017
