The Hindu - Classroom of the Year Contest

Your class can win the Hindu in School Storyboard Classroom of the Year award.

What to do?

Step 1: Qualifier
As a group, interview your English teacher. Remember to ask about why she loves teaching English

Step 2: Challenger
As a classroom, design a complete Storyboard page, similar to this page. Pick a good theme. Get creative!

Step 3: Coach Speak
Ask your English teacher to write a 250 words essay about memorable incidents from the classroom.

Step 4: Finale
Create a illustrated children's book of length between 10-20 pages. The best story gets the maximum  points.

How to Participate
Send an email to school@thehindu.co.in
Write Classroom of the year in the subject line and include the following details
a. Your school name and address
b. your class and section
c. Your English teacher's name and phone number

You will get registration confirmation from The Hindu and then you can send all the entries to the address provided by them.

Open to Classes 5 to 9; Minimum 7 in a team

‘On the spot’ Essay Writing Competition-2013 for Post-Graduate Students of Statistics

As part of the celebration of Statistics Day on the on 29th June, 2013, the Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation will organize an essay competition on subjects relevant to Statistics. The interested Post Graduate Students of Statistics currently studying in recognized university/colleges are invited to participate in an ‘on the spot’ essay writing competition.

1. Two topics of essay would be given on the spot and the essay should be written on one of the topics, of a length of about 5000 words in three hours time

2. Each eligible participant will be asked through a separate communication to come to the nearest  regional/Sub Regional Office of National Sample Survey Office for writing the essay. No TA/DA will be paid for appearing in the competition. The list of the Regional/Sub Regional Offices may be seen in the Ministry’s website http://www.mospi.nic.in (National Sample Survey Office\ Field Operations Division (FOD)\ (Telephone Directory). Nearest Regional Office may be mentioned in the application form.

3. The willing participants should submit their application (in duplicate) in the prescribed format (the application format can be downloaded from the Ministry’s website http://www.mospi.nic.in) through the Head of the Department of the College/University/Institute to the Additional Director General (Social Statistics Division), Central Statistics Office, Ministry of Statistics & PI, West Block-8, Wing-6, R.K. Puram, New Delhi-110066. The Competition will be held on 17th February, 2013 (Sunday) at 10.00 AM to 1.00 PM and the last date for the receipt of applications will be 25th January, 2013 (Friday).

4. The essays will be evaluated by a Committee constituted by MOSPI on the basis of Contents, originality of ideas, sequence of presentation and writing skills. The winners will be notified in writing. A full list of winners will also be published on ministry’s website. 
5.  The following prize will be given to the best selected essays at national level:
First Prize
Rs 15,000/-
Second Prize (2 numbers)
@ Rs. 12,000/- (each)
Third Prize (3 numbers)
@ Rs. 10,000/- (each)
Consolation prizes (5 numbers) @ Rs. 5,000/- (each)

6. The winners of the competition will be invited to a function to be organized in New Delhi. The winners coming to the place of function will be entitled to receive actual fares of their to and fro journey through shortest route by rail in AC-III tier, besides their stay arrangement at place of function to be made by the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.

ALL INDIA POETRY COMPETITION AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN 2013 and All India Poetry Competition 2013

CONDITIONS OF ENTRY

For the All India Poetry Competition Among School Children 2013


ORGANISER 

1. The Competition is organised by The Poetry Society (India).

COMPETITORS

2. The Competition is open to Indian school children and non-resident Indian students studying in secondary and higher secondary schools in the age group of 12-19.
3. No competitor may win more than one prize.

ADJUDICATION AND PRIZES

4. The poems entered for the Competition will be read by a panel of eminent Indian poets who will judge the entries.

5. The decision of the judges will be final and the organizers will not enter into any correspondence about the results.

6. The first prize will be Rs. 5,000/- in cash.

7. The second prize will be Rs. 3,000/- in cash.

8. There will be a third prize of Rs. 2,000/- and five commendation prizes of Rs. 1,000 each.

9. A list of prize-winners and the prize-winning poems will be uploaded on the website www.indianpoetry.org

ENTRY

10. All entries for the Competition should be submitted by email to hkkaul@gmail.com
11. There will be an entry fee of Rs. 100 per poem. Competitors may submit entries
            by e-mail at hkkaul@gmail.com as many entries as they wish.

12. Each student should forward the entry fees by a Demand Draft made in favour of  form. Payment sent by outstation cheques, cash or money order will not be accepted. Payments should be sent to:

13. Each entry must be either a poem written in English by the competitor or his/her  translation into English (in verse) of a poem written in any of the recognized Indian languages.

14. Before submitting the entries, the translators should have obtained permission from the authors of the poems for the use of their poems for this competition.

15. Each poem must be an unaided and unpublished work of the competitor. It must not be published or broadcast until the results of this competition are announced.

16. If it has been found that the competitor has copied in full or part a poem of another poet or downloaded in full or part a poem of another poet from the Internet, and submitted as an entry to the All India Poetry Competition Among School Children 2013, suitable/legal action can be taken against the competitor.

17. Entries will be judged without the panel of judges knowing the identity of the competitors. The competitor’s name must not be typed on the poem. 

18. The maximum length of poem should be about 30 lines.

19. Receipt of an entry will not be acknowledged unless a separate self-addressed and stamped envelope marked RECEIPT (School Children – 2013) is enclosed with the entry.

20. The worldwide copyright of each prize-winning or shortlisted poem, and of any other poem selected by the judges for special commendation will remain with the author, but The Poetry Society (India) shall have the unrestricted right to present the poem on television, radio or the stage, or to publish it at the time of the prize-giving, or at any time up to twelve months after the announcement of the results.

21. All competitors shall be deemed to have read and accepted all the conditions of entry for the All-India Poetry Competition Among School Children 2013.

Design for Change School Challenge

Design For Change is a global movement designed to give young people an opportunity to express their own ideas for a better world and put them into action With it’s inspirational roots at Riverside School, Ahmedabad, India, the global movement started in 2009 has inspired hundreds of thousands of children, their teachers and parents to celebrate the fact that they are not helpless, that change is possible and that they can lead and inspire that change.  

The program asks students to do four simple things: Feel, Imagine, Do and Share.This simple framework has inspired children across the world to say ‘I CAN’ instead of ‘CAN I?’ Children and adults learn through Design For Change that ‘I CAN’ are the two most powerful words a person can believe in! Children who have realized this are changing their world!

Why DFC Challenge?
The challenge is about making our children believe that Change is possible and that They can drive it!

Start the Challenge
1. Chare the idea of the challenge with the students (preferred age group 8-13 years)
2.  Select a mentor teacher and form teams (ideally 5 students per team)
3. Get each team to follow the simple 4 step process (FEEL, IMAGINE, DO, SHARE)

Feel - This step asks students to observe the situations in their community that bother them. After drawing out a list of situations, the students choose one that they would like to change. They explore why this situation bothers them, who are the people affected by this situation and who are the people involved in creating this situation.
Imagine - This step encourages students to interact with the people of their community to identify points of intervention and possible solutions. The students create their best-case scenario and re-design this situation to make it better.
Do - The students then develop a plan of action, keeping in mind the resources, budget, time and human resources they have. They then implement this plan.
Share - The final step is to share the story of change so that other people may be able replicate their solution and also be inspired to new problems. All stories of change are shared on the DFC website. Besides this, schools and organizations host events where the young change-leaders and their stories are celebrated!

Udayan Shalini Fellowships

Udayan in Sanskrit signifies 'eternal sunrise'. Shalini means 'a dignified woman'. Udayan Shalini Fellowships is  an academic excellence and personality development  programme for girls from weak socio-economic  backgrounds. It provides financial assistance for higher education, mentoring and leadership development  through workshops, while facilitating a sense of social responsibility and aims to turn them into dignified  women..   This programme, which focuses on Education and Personality Development of its recipients, was launched in
August 2002. Currently, it covers Delhi (2002), Kurukshetra (2004), Kolkata & Dehradun (2007), Aurangabad  (2008) and Phagwara (2012).

ELIGIBILITY:-
1. Female Indian citizen, permanent resident of Delhi / Kurukshetra / Kolkata / Dehradun / Aurangabad & Phagwara.  
2. Candidates are required to obtain admission to the desired school, prior to seeking Fellowship.
3. The applicant should be in class 11 th  from Government school.
 4.  Minimum marks required for academic courses are 60% in class 10 th .
5. Total income of the family members/ guardian not to exceed Rs. 96, 000/- per year. 

SELECTION PROCESS:-
• Application to be made on the prescribed form. Last date of the receipt of form is 31 st  July. Application  forms can be collected from our office or downloaded from our website (www.udayancare.org) from 1 st July onwards.
• All applications shall be screened on NAT Parameters.
• Short-listed candidates shall be called for a written test by the selection committee. Venue of written test for  Delhi: Mahavir Senior Model School, Opp. Nanak Piao Gurudwara, G. T. Karnal Road, Delhi  110033. For the other state, kindly contact to respective offices.
• Those who qualify the written test are interviewed along with their parents / guardian.
• Home visit will be conducted for those who qualify in the interview
• Those selected would be called for induction and orientation.
• The selection will be done by the Udayan Shalini Fellowship core committee
FELLOWSHIP AMOUNT: 
• Senior Secondary School (Class 11th  & 12th  ) Rs.8000/- per year in four equal installments

Gurukul Anubhav scholarship scheme 2012 has been announced for the youth between 14 years and 26 years of age. Through the scholarship scheme,  SPIC MACAY makes an attempt to bring the students closer to a world of wisdom, inspiration,  dreams, discovery and exploration for a period of one month. It brings them in contact with such  dedicated and acclaimed people who have achieved a lot in their respective fields through the  strength that comes from sheer hard work, discipline and inherent talent.

In the serene environment  of the Ashram, spending exclusive time with their Gurus, candidates will get an elevated and  intense experience. Around 10 candidates will be selected for each Guru. Expected Gurus for this  exclusive scheme will be: Shri Kalamandalam Gopi for Kathakalii, Padmasri Ustad Fariduddin  Dagar for Hindustani Dhrupad vocal, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj / Guru Munna Shukla for Kathak, Padma Bhushan Prof C.V Chandrasekhar for Bharatanatyam, Vidushi Smt R. Vedavalli  for Carnatic vocal and Guru Ghanakanta Bora for Sattriya dance. The proposed dates are from 6th  June 2012 to 6th July 2012.  

For submitting the application the candidate can use the above mentioned tentative list of Likely Gurus.  To apply the candidate should send his / her profile, along with a one page write-up on “Why I want to  go”. Candidates can download the form from the website (http://www.spicmacay.com) from Scholarship  Scheme link. Selected candidates will be called for interview. All final selected candidates for this scheme  will have to furnish a bond of Rs. 5,000/-, which will be refunded after successful completion of the tenure.  The scheme will commence in the months of May, June and July, each candidate will be required to stay  with the Guru for a month.

Rules and Regulations:

1. The scholarship entails staying with a guru for one month in summer. Travel expenses to and from the
guru’s residence (Second Class Sleeper) will be borne by SPIC MACAY.
2. Applications screened for the interview will be informed by email / phone, following which they will have
to present themselves at specified centers. Please note that travel expenses incurred for interviews will
have to be borne by the applicants.
3. While the selection panel does it’s utmost to place the applicants with one of the gurus of their choice,
this may not always be possible. In such cases, the decision of the panel in placing the student will be
